To the extent you do not have 4th of July plans at the shore or some other venue and you're looking for something unique to do, please feel free to join us down at the Powel House located in Society Hill, Philadelphia for a barbeque, live music and historic house tours.  Next year will mark the 250th anniversary of the Powel House, a Georgian mansion constructed in 1765 by a Scottish ship's master, Charles Stedman, that was ultimately sold to Samuel Powel in 1769. Samuel occupied the house with his new bride, Elizabeth Willing.  Samuel Powel is hailed as Philadelphia's "Patriot Mayor" having served as the mayor of the City briefly before the American Revolution broke out and then at the end of the 1780s when he returned to office as the first mayor after the Revolution.  The Powels frequently hosted many of the revolutionary period dignitaries in their home and were very close friends of the Washingtons.  As a matter of recorded fact, George Washington was the Powels' guest of honor in January 1779, delighting the daughter of Ben Franklin by whirling her around the dance floor.  The mansion is steeped in history and would make a wonderful spot to celebrate the 4th as it is a stone's throw away from Independence Park and Independence Hall.
We will also be displaying a private collection series of very rare 18th century Revolutionary War period maps and Philadelphia views alongside other special materials being displayed by The Philadelphia Print Shop. The garden will be tented, food will be catered by Diverse Catering, music played by the Knox Street Band and the air conditioned house will be open to walk through. This should be a very special event to celebrate the birth of our nation.
